The Top-Most Common Jewelry Repair

wedding

Jewelry Repair Creations repairs a lot of jewelry. In fact, that’s what the majority of our business is built on. Over the years, we’ve repaired tens of thousands upon dozens of pieces and learned a lot along the way. We sat down with Tom (aka the goldsmith) to discuss the most common repairs as well as what to watch out for to ensure your jewelry is in top shape.

Ring Sizing

Ring sizing is the most popular repair. These are something we do all day. Lionel could even write a song about this, all day. We determine the size of your finger and make the ring to fit it. These ring sizes can be cut in half or quarters if necessary to ensure that your little jewel stays on your finger.

What to Watch Out for

We recommend that you take off your rings every now and again to keep your fingers and fingers safe. While we prefer to remove our rings every night, some people don’t like the idea of them being off so often. It should be simple to slip on your ring and require a little wiggling to get off.

We don’t recommend licking your finger and ring if you are having trouble getting it off. You can use Windex to spray your ring and angela simpson finger with a quick and easy trick. It acts as a lubricant. After spraying, move the ring around and you will be able to free it.

If the ring is still not on your finger, come in to see us. We’ll help you take it off. We can discuss whether the ring needs to be resized or adjusted to fit better.

The worst case scenario is when the ring might need to be removed. This sounds scary and daunting, but it’s not. A special tool is used to cut a small hole in the shank’s bottom. This allows us to gently disassemble the ring and then release it from your fingers. This is because we do it while sizing the rings. It does not remove the first step in the sizing process. You see? It’s not scary at all!

Although this is not about sizing, it is important to remember that multiple rings, such as a wedding set, can rub against one another and prematurely age the rings. Soldering the rings together is a simple way to solve this problem. This will prevent the rings spinning around on your finger.

How it’s repaired

Our goldsmiths begin by cutting a small opening at bottom of shank. The illustration is below. The size of the ring will determine whether it is increasing or decreasing in size. If the ring is going up, we will open the shank to the correct size and add the metal. Then, we will use our soldering tools to flow the metal into the ring. If it’s falling, we will remove any excess metal and solder the metal together. Then, we shape and polish the metal as required.

Broken Shank Repair

It’s not something you would think, but it is what we see a lot. You often think of gold, platinum, and other metals and think how difficult it is to break. That’s why we use them in jewelry. Your jewelry can take wear and stress. A fracture can occur from wear and stress over time. Nine out of ten fractures will occur at the bottom or the shank.
