Jewelry Repair Creations repairs a lot of jewelry. In fact, that’s what the majority of our business is built on. Over the years, we’ve repaired tens of thousands upon dozens of pieces and learned a lot along the way. We sat down with Tom (aka the goldsmith) to discuss the most common repairs as well as what to watch out for to ensure your jewelry is in top shape.
Ring Sizing
Ring sizing is the most popular repair. These are something we do all day. Lionel could even write a song about this, all day. We determine the size of your finger and make the ring to fit it. These ring sizes can be cut in half or quarters if necessary to ensure that your little jewel stays on your finger.
What to Watch Out for
We recommend that you take off your rings every now and again to keep your fingers and fingers safe. While we prefer to remove our rings every night, some people don’t like the idea of them being off so often. It should be simple to slip on your ring and require a little wiggling to get off.
We don’t recommend licking your finger and ring if you are having trouble getting it off. You can use Windex to spray your ring and angela simpson finger with a quick and easy trick. It acts as a lubricant. After spraying, move the ring around and you will be able to free it.
If the ring is still not on your finger, come in to see us. We’ll help you take it off. We can discuss whether the ring needs to be resized or adjusted to fit better.
The worst case scenario is when the ring might need to be removed. This sounds scary and daunting, but it’s not. A special tool is used to cut a small hole in the shank’s bottom. This allows us to gently disassemble the ring and then release it from your fingers. This is because we do it while sizing the rings. It does not remove the first step in the sizing process. You see? It’s not scary at all!
Although this is not about sizing, it is important to remember that multiple rings, such as a wedding set, can rub against one another and prematurely age the rings. Soldering the rings together is a simple way to solve this problem. This will prevent the rings spinning around on your finger.

How it’s repaired
Our goldsmiths begin by cutting a small opening at bottom of shank. The illustration is below. The size of the ring will determine whether it is increasing or decreasing in size. If the ring is going up, we will open the shank to the correct size and add the metal. Then, we will use our soldering tools to flow the metal into the ring. If it’s falling, we will remove any excess metal and solder the metal together. Then, we shape and polish the metal as required.
Broken Shank Repair
It’s not something you would think, but it is what we see a lot. You often think of gold, platinum, and other metals and think how difficult it is to break. That’s why we use them in jewelry. Your jewelry can take wear and stress. A fracture can occur from wear and stress over time. Nine out of ten fractures will occur at the bottom or the shank.

A ring that isn’t fitted properly could cause it to fall off or cut off circulation. You might consider having your ring resized if it doesn’t fit correctly.
There are several factors that will affect the price of resizing a ring: what metal you use, how much you need to change it, and how intricate or wide the ring is.
Expect to pay between $30 and $200, with an average price in the $30 to $55 area.
Soldering Broken Chains: $20-$230
You can repair the necklace’s chain by having it soldered. This can cost anywhere from $20 to $230, depending on the metal used and the area that must be soldered.
These repairs can be affordable. For example, you could solder a link on a simple chain of platinum or gold that will cost between $20 and $35. For something more complicated, like soldering a hinged joint, it can cost between $55 to $230.
Replacing a Clasp is $12-$250
It is possible for your bracelet or necklace to fall off if the clasp is broken or faulty. Get the clasp replaced to prevent you from losing a treasured piece.

- Ring Sizing and Soldering
You are constantly changing with the weather and your life. You can wear your wedding band in winter, but it won’t fit well in summer. The right size ring can have its benefits. You don’t want your beautiful diamond ring to slide around the sides, so you are in the right place. Soldering your wedding set together will ensure it stays put and prevents damage. Metals, diamonds and other stones can scratch or wear each other. To avoid costly repairs that can damage your wedding set, ring soldering is a good option. Your soldered rings will look like they were made with skillful jewelry repair.
- Ring Prong Replacement or Re-tipping
Prongs love to snuggle under a blanket. Take a deep breath and let your dishes dry. Break it off completely. What’s that beautiful stone going to do? You don’t even know it! Don’t be embarrassed by it. You can easily see the damage yourself if your prongs are damaged. You should inspect your jewelry for any differences in appearance or if the prongs are snagging on your sweaters. A skilled jeweler can repair, retip or replace the prong depending on the extent of the damage. These repairs should be handled by a professional jeweler. It’s not easy to secure a stone without causing additional problems.
- Set or Head Replacement for Rings
One prong is broken. You may need to bring it in immediately, but other times you can continue with your day. Other prongs are welcome to join the fun when it comes to jewelry cleaning and inspection. If multiple or all of the prongs are damaged, ring head and setting replacement repairs may be required. This is the part that holds your beautiful diamond. To repair any part of a ring, you can trust the expertise of a jeweler. This will prevent stone tightening and give you healthy prongs. This will save you money and keep your stone safe.
- Chain or Clasp Repair
It’s a necklace you don’t want to take off. It goes with everything, from casual wear to formal wear. You can adjust the clasp to loosen the clasp or a few links may look off. Broken clasps, necklaces, and chains are easy to repair. Professional jewelers will match the quality metals for broken clasps and chains. Your beloved necklace will be seamlessly transformed.
- Stone Replacement
A sharp blow to the stone or damage to the prongs can cause stone damage. Routine inspections by jewelers can help to catch loose or chipped stones early. The stone may be damaged enough to require you to take it to a highly-skilled jeweler if you haven’t seen them in awhile.
